Outgoing Mayor of Basildon hands over thousands to chosen charities

22 May Outgoing Mayor of Basildon hands over thousands to chosen charities

The outgoing Mayor of Basildon has presented two charities with cheques totalling £12,820 following a successful year of fundraising.

Over the past year David Harrison has supported Be Child Cancer Aware, which provides support to children and families affected by cancer, and the Polly Parrot Appeal, which raises funds to improve facilities available on the children’s wards at Basildon Hospital. The latest donation is in addition to almost £2,000 which has already been paid directly to the two charities.

The Mayor said: “These fantastic charities are close to my heart and it has been an absolute privilege to work with them.

“During my two terms as Mayor of Basildon I have raised just under £32,000 for good causes, and would like to thank all of the generous people who have supported me in my fundraising efforts.

“It has been an honour to serve this borough and I have fond memories of the events I have attended and all of the residents I have met.”

During his first term, Mayor David Harrison supported the children’s counselling service at St Luke’s Hospice and raised funds for high-specification monitoring equipment in the Wagtail Ward at Basildon Hospital.

A new Mayor will be elected during the Annual Meeting of Basildon Council on Thursday (24 May).
