Maldon Building Services supports local woman Amy Shead

28 Feb Maldon Building Services supports local woman Amy Shead

Maldon Building Services is supporting local woman, Amy Shead, and her family by constructing an extension on Amy’s home in Westcliff-on-Sea in order to adapt it to make it suitable for Amy’s disabilities and as comfortable as possible.

In 2014, due to a restaurant’s negligence, Amy suffered a catastrophic allergic reaction to nuts whilst on holiday in Budapest. Since then, Amy’s life has been completely altered and she is currently on a long path of rehabilitation and care.

Amy has spent two years in hospital and almost a further two years in a care facility. Due to the severity of her brain injury she is dependent on carers and is wheelchair bound. A purpose-built extension to suit her disability and accommodate her needs will allow her devoted parents to bring her home to live.

Maldon Building Services are constructing this single storey side and rear extension which will contain Amy’s room with access to the rear garden, a wet room with a hoist and a carer’s room. In addition to this, there will be some internal refurbishment to accommodate Amy’s wheelchair and make the living space more accessible for her.

Originally, the quote to carry out this work on the home was over £90,000 however Maldon Building Services is determined to reduce this fee to make this renovation achievable for Amy and her family. To do this, Maldon Building Services’ Founder, Ian Freshwater, made the decision to donate free labour and invested his own time in to contacting all suppliers and subcontractors to see if they could help. This has included securing free materials, fixtures, fittings and furniture. As a result, Maldon Building Services was able to decrease the initial cost by nearly £30,000 and is on a mission to reduce this total further. The restaurant responsible for this tragedy disastrously held no public liability insurance so there can be no claim made against them to assist with Amy’s lifelong care.

Maldon Building Services will be holding a fundraising day on Saturday 24 March at Danbury Outdoors. The team will tackle an obstacle course with the determination to raise as much money for Amy as possible. Members of the public are invited to go along to the fundraising day starting at 9.30am and show their support by cheering on the contestants.
