Libraries across Essex to support the Big Knit

Residents can help this year’s fundraising drive by joining Knit and Natter groups at libraries across Essex, knitting mini woolly hats in aid of Age UK Essex.

Teaming with drinks brand Innocent, each hat donated will be placed on a bottle of Innocent Smoothie and sold, with 25p going to Age UK Essex.

The deadline for contributions to the 2016/2017 campaign is Friday, 20 January, with the aim of beating last year total of 11,000 hats.

Cllr Anne Brown, Cabinet Member with responsibility for libraries at Essex County Council said: “The Big Knit gives people a great opportunity to use their knitting skills to donate vital funds to help vulnerable elderly people.

“Knit and Natter groups are run at libraries across the county and give people who share an interest in knitting a chance to meet up and share stories, and knitting patterns, in a friendly environment.

“Last year our groups donated hundreds of hats to the cause, and we would love to see more.

“And of course if you cannot get along to a group, then come and speak to staff at your local library who will be more than happy to help support you in setting up a new Knit and Natter group.”

The money raised through the national campaign will go towards providing blankets, hot water bottles, hot meals, support and social gatherings for elderly residents throughout the long winter months.

Kimberley Gosden, Relationship Coordinator at Age UK Essex  added: “We always enjoy being involved with the Big Knit and we have had a great response already with knitting arriving regularly. The knitting phase is slightly longer this year giving local people and knitting groups plenty of time to get those knitting needles to work. The support from the people of Essex is always fantastic and we hope it will continue for the Big Knit 2016/2017 so we can reach our target.”
