Harlow SOUP raises over £500 for Harlow Rock School at the third event held at Pemberley Academy, Harlow.

Harlow SOUP, which took place on Thursday 30th August at Pemberley Academy, raised over £500 for winning project Harlow Rock School enabling them to decorate and furnish their new building which will include upcycling furniture.

The third ever Harlow SOUP at Pemberley Academysaw over 100 people in attendance,all donating a “pay as you feel” entrance fee for a chance to hear about inspiring community projects which benefit Harlow Town.

The event featured four community projects all hopingto win the money raised on the door and they only have four minutes to pitch their idea.

Community diners voted for their favourite project and Harlow Rock School were awarded the money. Attendees also got a chance to listen to some live music from The Subway’s Billy Lunnand sample a selection of delicious homemade soup, breads, salads and cakes (all included in the entrance fee).

Winners Harlow Rock School plan to use the money to buy and upcycle furniture for its new premises, enabling the young peoplewho use its free service to put their stamp on the space and make it their own.

Three other pitches were also extremely well-received by diners at the event, and included Teens Unite, a charity supporting young people with cancer, Freshwaters Contact Centre, a safe meeting place for families dealing with separation or a family breakdown, and Changing Lives, a new local sports and football schemeaimed to keep young people out of gangs.

Winners from the previous Harlow SOUP event ASL, a community interest company that offers employment opportunities and day care to young adults with additional needs, presented to community diners about how they had spent their money. The not-for-profit organisation had not only managed to achieve their goals in obtaining new equipment for their new tearoom, but had also seen a surge in customers since winning the last Harlow SOUP and an increased awareness about the organisation and its services.

The next Harlow SOUP event will take place on 29th November, and submissions are now open for new and exciting Harlow-based projects. The only criteria for submission is that the project benefits the town.
