16 Jan Council supporting Wickford residents to establish a Town Council as petition handed over

Basildon Council have been handed a petition by Wickford residents who would like to see a Town Council established.
After the handing over of the petition, Cllr Andrew Baggott, Leader of Basildon Council, said: “This is really good news for Wickford and I welcome local people wanting to be more involved in their community. I look forward to having a positive relationship if the new council is formed.”

The council have advised that the petition will have the effect of requiring us to undertake a Community Governance Review in accordance with guidance issued by the Secretary of State and the Local Government Boundary Commission for England under section 100 of the Local Government and Public Involvement and Health Act 2007.

Now the council have received the petition, the terms of reference for the review we are required to undertake will be on the agenda at the next meeting of the Policy, Oversight and Scrutiny Committee in February. Then the process of carrying out the review can start which will include two phases of public consultation which the Council will take into account when deciding whether or not to progress the proposal.
