Colchester U’s centre back Frankie Kent scoops award

December’s EFL Young Player of the Month Frankie Kent has a bright future in the game!

Colchester United Head Coach John McGreal believes that December’s EFL Young Player of the Month Frankie Kent has a bright future in the game.

John was named as December’s Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month and he praised the development of his young centre back this season.

The duo have progressed in parallel over the last few years, with John having managed Frankie at U18s, U21s and first team level.

John believes Frankie could go a long way: “He’s a 6 ft 2” ball-playing centre-back. He’s getting more aggressive with his play and his reading of the game is excellent.

“He’s still got a lot to do, but being a centre-back playing regular League Two football at 21, that bodes well for him.”

On Frankie Kent winning December’s award, Director of Youth Development at the EFL, David Wetherall said: “Frankie has played a very positive role in Colchester’s recent good form.

“It’s very pleasing to see a product of an Academy not only graduate to first team level, but performing strongly at that level and Frankie is certainly doing that at this time.

“It’s also pleasing to see that the club’s continued focus on developing their own young players is having a very positive effect at first team level.”
The EFL recently launched EFL Futures, a new £2.25m financial incentive scheme that rewards EFL Clubs who introduce young English players into their starting line-ups.
More than 200 players aged 21 or under make their professional debuts for EFL Clubs each season and the campaign is central to the EFL’s ambition to create opportunities for young players and continues the proud tradition the EFL has of supporting the development of young English talent.
