Basildon councillors to consider extending hot meals service

22 Nov Basildon councillors to consider extending hot meals service

The Communities Committee will meet next week to discuss plans to invest £10,000 into extending the hot meals service at the George Hurd Centre in Basildo.

Basildon Council has been working alongside the George Hurd Centre (GHC) Committee since February 2018 to serve a selection of pre-packaged meals and desserts one day a week.

Councillor Andy Barnes, Chairman of the Communities Committee, said: “We are committed to ensuring residents are happy and healthy, and understand that our activity centres can be a real lifeline to a lot of the older people who visit them. The social aspect is really important, and it means a lot to members to be able to have a chat over lunch.

“The GHC Committee is also confident that bringing people together in this way has the potential to increase the number of members who are able to access the wider range of services available.”

The George Hurd Centre, in Audley Way, Basildon, offers a range of fitness classes, craft activities and entertainment events for members over the age of 50. Numerous day trips are also organised every year.

The Communities Committee will meet in the St George’s Suite, at the Basildon Centre, at 7pm on Wednesday 28 November.
